I run a small chemical blending operation in Jebel Ali and we're starting to move our products between our main facility and a new storage site we just opened in Abu Dhabi. We've been using standard 1000L plastic drums so far but the logistics are killing us because they take up so much space and loading/unloading is a nightmare. I'm looking at switching to IBC tank to make things more efficient but I'm getting confused about the regulations here. One of my suppliers mentioned that we need to use UN-approved ones if we're transporting anything classified as hazardous, and honestly I had no idea about this until they brought it up. We mostly deal with water-based solvents and cleaning solutions, nothing too crazy, but I don't want to get fined or have our shipments stopped at checkpoints because we're using the wrong equipment. Has anyone had experience with this? Do we absolutely need the certification or can we get away with standard containers for the stuff we're moving? I've been reading up on it and apparently the IBC Tank UN Approved ones go through strict testing for pressure resistance and leak tightness, which sounds important but I'm not sure if it's overkill for our specific products. Would love to hear from others who've been through this process.
